Synopsis

“I’m not angry with you, Zack, I’m angry in general. I’m an artist, that’s my job.” 

Ivan is a struggling actor who hasn’t yet achieved the recognition he feels he deserves. But all that is about to change when, one afternoon at the zoo with his friend Zack, he is swallowed whole by a crocodile. What follows is a story of fame and failure in the wasteland of late capitalism.

Adapted by Tom Basden from the short story by Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Crocodile is a ferociously funny, eye-poppingly theatrical play about art, animals and what happens when you try to take on the system from within [a reptile].

Staging

The set is comprised of approximately 8-12 flats that are drilled together to create two walls at a right angle to each other. The flats are covered with cardboard, so not too heavy, and pack down fairly compactly. The playing space floor is also covered in glued together cardboard, contained by a low wooden ledge around the front of the stage.

A ladder is required backstage so that actors can climb to a height of approximately 2-3 metres.

There is one prop that hangs from the lighting rig and at one point in the show is lowered onto the stage via a small pulley.

Stage requirements: 6×6 metres. Height minimum 4 metres.

Crew Notes

Due to the set largely being made of cardboard, it may require small repairs (using hot glue guns) post-shows.

The Crocodile is for audiences who come to the theatre for a visual feast, overt theatricality and costumes to die for. It’s a hilariously sharp script with relatable content, delivered with energy. Theatregoers and lit lovers will enjoy the themes around art and capitalism, fellow creatives will enjoy this satirical look in the mirror, and having seen hundreds of VCE students delight in the work first-hand, we know that it can bring joy, entertainment, and food for thought to many generations.
