Sincere Apologies

Producer: Alternative Facts
Writer: Dan Koop, Jamie Lewis and David Williams based on a concept by David Williams and Roslyn Oades
Directed By: Dan Koop, Jamie Lewis and David Williams

A truly unique audience experience of collective joy

Synopsis

SINCERE APOLOGIES is a performance based on all the apologies that the world keeps offering – the famous, the obscure, and those that begin every second email in our inboxes. It is a work about how we say sorry, and how we really mean it. But it’s also a whole lot more – a wild interactive ride that constantly surprises and is unexpectedly joyous. You will leave the show feeling a sense of exhilarating connectedness and unity with other audience members. The show begins with a live Zoom in which the collaborating artists – Dan Koop, David Williams and Jamie Lewis along with a local guest performer, each apologise for not being able to be there.  They explain to the audience that a package has been left onstage for them, and inside the package are instructions for them to follow. It is at this point the audience take on the role of the performers.

SINCERE APOLOGIES will transform the audience into a temporary community, coming together to try to move through our collective regret into a place where we might try to fix the parts of the world that are broken. As the world burns, floods, and chokes with microplastics, in SINCERE APOLOGIES we dream up the apologies that we will have to deliver to our children for leaving them with such a world as this.

Through hyper-personal over-sharing, to apologies of great political weight, to joyous collective karaoke, this experience is truly unique – by turns awkward, funny, unexpectedly intimate and strangely moving.

Short Reviews

I laughed a lot but the piece itself was dealing with real, hard and important content - sometimes it feels the only way to let us approach real and important content is to let us laugh ...like our brains relax, our hearts open if we can laugh

I usually feel so uncomfortable with audience interaction but this didn’t feel like that - it felt like you involved us in the work - we weren’t the audience .. and to my own surprise, I loved singing Cher in a group at the end

  • 2 x handheld radio mics if possible
  • Show will use in-house audio desk and speaker set up

Staging

The cast appear via ZOOM at the top of the show. This is a live link so we require stable internet. The rest of the show is performance by the audience via instructions sent in advance

The show is best suited to a studio or black box theatre. It can also work in a flat floor space. If in a proscenium theatre, the audience would need to be set up with seats on the stage.

The set up of the ‘stage’ should be like a writers talk. Four chairs positioned in front of  a projection screen with corded mics set up in front of each chair.

As the show is still being developed the technical requirements are still being refined however we will require the venue to provide the following:

  • 4 x corded microphones on mic stands
  • 2 x handheld radio mics if possible
  • A self supporting projection screen (can be large tripod screen)

  • 4 x chairs
  • Basic PA and sound desk
  • Basic LX rig capable of some washes and specials.
