An interactive runway show where audiences design, make and model.
Synopsis
House of Fast Fashun is a participatory performance where audiences become fashion designers, makers and runway models.
A house-shaped sculpture made of clothing waste forms the centrepiece of the installation. Surrounding it are piles of discarded garments and worktables. Audiences are welcomed and invited to transform waste into haute couture. There is a low barrier to taking part — sewing machines are available, but the use of safety pins is encouraged, and artists are on hand to help. Audience members are also welcome to sit back and watch the chaos unfold.
Participants are invited to showcase their looks on a runway that happens every hour on the hour. When the call comes, they step inside the house, then burst onto the catwalk to rapturous applause.
Blending installation, performance and community participation, the work playfully critiques consumerism and waste while offering a hands-on, inclusive experience that turns trash into spectacle, collaboration and joy.
Originally commissioned by Midsumma Festival (2023), House of Fast Fashun has since been presented at Sydney Festival, South Side Festival, The National Wool Museum and Re//Perth, demonstrating its adaptability across festivals, galleries and civic spaces.

Selling Points
- House of Fast Fashun is a highly visual, high-energy fashion spectacle that attracts audiences through colour, movement, music and frequent runway moments. The installation acts as a visual beacon in public space, drawing foot traffic and curiosity from passersby.
- The work is deeply participatory and inclusive, with a deliberately low barrier to entry. No sewing skills are required. Fast Fashun artists support participants throughout, and the collective brings lived experience of disability, embedding access and care into the work’s design. Tactile tours, audio descriptions, social stories and one on one support can be offered for audiences.
- Sustainability is central to the project. Materials are sourced from discarded clothing waste, often in partnership with local op shops using items that cannot be resold. Through playful participation, the work explores the climate crisis, waste and environmental sustainability in joyful, accessible ways.
