6 performers recreate the 12 moments of theatre that changed their lives.
Synopsis
6 performers recreate the 12 moments of theatre that changed their lives.
- Moments from shows that toured the world.
- Moments that pushed the boundaries of performance, aesthetic, & time.
- Moments from shows adapted from movies.
- Moments that redefined our ideas of gender, age, & disability.
- Moments that left us softly weeping in the dark.
In painstaking detail, we perform a remarkably informal, undeniably queer, and unpredictably messy resurrection of those moments for the here-&-now.
What arises is an autobiographical, highly physical, and probingly funny performance that transforms a community space into a theatre, a gallery, a nightclub, a colosseum, and the room above a pub.
Grand Theft Theatre is a crazily ambitious, extremely silly, and epically low-fi ode to the theatre legacies we collectively carry, and those personal memories that we desperately need to share. An adventurous communal experience that “delivers the audience the beating heart of theatre” (Theatre Travels).

Staging
Grand Theft Theatre (GTT) is designed to be extremely versatile, low-fi, and seemingly off-the-cuff. A minimum floor space of 10m x 12m is required, but larger spaces (eg. town halls, community halls or large black box spaces) are ideal. GTT would suit both touring to community presenters and more traditional theatre venues.
In all presentation environments, GTT enables audiences to encounter their venue in previously-unseen ways. GTT can be adapted to a wide range of performance spaces, but does require the capacity to move the audience into multiple seating configurations during the performance.
Crew Notes
1 x venue crew (for 8 hours) is required to assist touring party install show.
No show crew is required.
Transport Notes
This show tours with a 1-tonne van and an 8-seater people mover.
Audience & Marketing Notes
Intergenerational: This show plays well to audiences aged 18-34 and 50+. Bringing together a dynamic style and a sensitive exploration of memory.
Contemporary: People interested in theatre that challenges traditional modes of storytelling.
The show’s experiential design makes it perfect for couples & groups looking for a fun night out.
This is not just a show for theatre lovers! The show dissects the nature of memory, nostalgia, and reflects on those quiet moments that shape who we become.
Selling Points
- Grand Theft Theatre won the prestigious ‘Best Theatre’ award at the 2022 Melbourne Fringe Festival.
- The show has been made by nationally renowned theatre maker David Williams and the award winning company Pony Cam. David’s works have won Helpmann, Drovers’ and Green Room Awards, and Pony Cam is a company of radical emerging artists.
- The show creates a communal experience that is generous, reflective and FUN! Exploring the ways that performance can facilitate the sharing of memories, and the re-telling of local histories, the show is well-suited for schools & community groups to attend as groups.
Community Engagement
- Workshop: We can offer workshops to the community. These would be opportunities for people in the community to bring their own memories of performance and creatively develop structures for sharing and performing them. These workshops give people an opportunity to learn a different way of performing / public speaking, and a space to collectively reflect on those meaningful experiences that have impacted them.
