Synopsis
It’s Burnie, Tasmania 1992. Justin is an only child living with his mother who suffers from schizophrenia. When she is well, Mum is perfect. She knows he likes his carrots raw and his toasted cooled, and she knows how to soothe his growing pains. But when she is sick she cries uncontrollably and never gets out of bed.
From sad days to Hey Hey It’s Saturday, Get Up Mum is a brave, intimate and powerful presentation by ne of Australia’s most original artists, Justin Heazlewood AKA The Bedroom Philosopher.
Funny and sad in equal measure, Get Up Mum is a nostalgic rollercoaster ride of childhood, cassettes and mental illness.
An only child and his Mum are trying to love each. other but mental illness keeps getting in the way.

- Main playing area is defined by touring carpet 5m x 7m.
- Other elements are small furniture items and props.
- Suitable wings and masking required for costume change and props tables.

Audience & Marketing Notes
This is a show with a big heart. Its undeniable power comes from the fact that Justin is telling his own startlingly personal story. It is a complex story told simply from the heart. An only child and his Mum trying to love each other but mental illness keeps getting in the way.
Justin’s work is a fascinating, uplifting and entertaining contribution to our growing conversation about mental health.
The audience is anyone from age 14+. The show is particularly appealing to boys.
Justin and Far and Away have developed relationships with a wide range of mental health organisations who will assist promote the show in their communities and regions.
The book GET UP MUM was published in 2018, and made into a radio series for Radio National in 2019 giving the title a familiarity.
Justin is also known as stand-up comedian The Bedroom Philosopher. He has appeared on Triple J and ABC TV and has released three albums including the Aria-nominated Songs from the 86 Tram.
