Bring your squad to BOSS SQUAD!
Synopsis
BOSS SQUAD is an award winning contemporary circus show featuring high level circus skills from some of Australia’s fiercest female performers.
We are not alone in being a circus show with only female acrobats, a recent list compiled by Berlin Circus Festival proves there are near 100 across the world. However, this type of work is still relatively new to Australia and women can often be left out of the conversation (and the action) but BOSS SQUAD intends to assert ourselves as ones not to be disregarded, overlooked, or undervalued.
The concepts explored are largely based on ‘the female experience’; drawing on our own personal experiences with topics such as anxiety, female comedy, female friendships, sexuality and physicality/the female body.
It is clear from the Wellbeing and Engagement Collection Study run in South Australia in 2018 that works that empower teenage girls are paramount. Females aged 9 to 18 report a higher percentage of worries, sadness, low satisfaction with life and low optimism compared to their male counterparts. Circus, and the arts in a wider context, are uniquely positioned to start these conversations about female wellbeing and provide physically and mentally strong role models.
That’s why we’re smashing stereotypes while smashing out tricks! BOSS SQUAD calls out the cat callers, while embracing all things weird and acrobatically wonderful. Sideshow, Hula-Hoops, German Wheel and Teeterboard are some of the amazing circus acts on show in this latest work where we’ll laugh at the ridiculous period myths and embrace our sexuality. This is a celebration of what women can achieve, and how we can support each other in even the biggest and boldest of ventures.
“This show is for any girl who has ever been told they shouldn’t be strong. For any girl who has been told to behave “like a girl”.” ★★★★- Fest Mag
“The show is triumphant and worthy of a standing ovation.” ★★★★- Weekend Notes

Young People: written for an audience of 13 – 30 year olds, based on the lived experiences of the acrobats of the same age. BOSS SQUAD features first person storytelling in an educational and relatable way.
Women and girls: the work is empowering, displays and celebrates female strength,
sends a positive message and provides the audience with female mentors/ role models.
Feminists or Not-Quite-Feminists: Simply having a cast of only one gender is a statement in itself, however the content also speaks to feminist issues ie. female friendships, over-apologising, sexual assault & mental health. This is an easy introduction to feminism and it’s ideas, the audience member who does not self-express as a feminist will enjoy the show and learn something without feeling forced upon.
