Black Sun / Blood Moon

Producer: Critical Stages Touring
Writer: Chris Bendall
Directed By: Chris Bendall

A fantastical new story about finding your voice and saving the world.

Synopsis

Two intertwining stories – one magical, the other all too real – bring two unlikely heroes to the stage in a new work inspired by the Fridays for Future student-led protests of 2019. Black Sun / Blood Moon follows Maddy, a ten-year-old climate champion, and Katie, the underachieving assistant of a climate-denying politician, as they set out to save the planet.

When Paul unwittingly inspires his young daughter Maddy to take part in a school climate strike, their lives are turned upside down irrevocably. Maddy’s journey will put her at increasing risk as she takes her message to the powers that be, while Katie will find herself on the back of eagles and dolphins as she attempts to fulfill a fantastical quest from the future.

Featuring stunning video and projection, and amazing life-size puppetry by Erth Visual and Physical, Black Sun / Blood Moon will delight families with young people 12 years and older.

Selling Points

  • Timely: Black Sun / Blood Moon is a new play about the climate crisis, and the #FridaysForFuture school strike movement, with a decidedly magic realist twist. It’s about a 10-year-old climate warrior, the power of every person to find their voice and take responsibility, and the magic of storytelling.
  • Design & Experience: If you love gorgeous visual design and fantastic puppetry this is the show to bring the whole family to – a highly theatrical experience about the mess we’ve made, and how we can find a solution together.
  • Youth Engagement: Young people 13-17 have been vocal about how positive it was to see themselves represented. There is excellent potential for engagement with this demographic, as well as local environment initiatives.

Community Engagement

  • Workshops and Conversations - We\'re keen to explore forums, interactive and digital conversation events, and creative workshops with you. Please chat to us about creating a special event or education experience at your venue.
  • Environment Initiatives - Engage your local council’s waste and environment teams/officers - there may be a local initiative the show can help draw attention to, and vice versa. Seek out your local climate champions and organisations for support and resources. If there’s room in your venue for a presence by a key group or initiative it can be a great way to value-add while also accessing a ready audience keen on the themes.
  • Community Card - a printable A5 flyer highlighting the small steps we can all achieve to help the planet. he card can be utilised in-venue as a value add, as an interesting way to capture the public’s attention in cafes and libraries, or distributed to homes in your region.
  • Foyer Activation - the show will travel with our signature production light tower. This 2.3m high inflatable illuminated column features cast and creative team bios, tag line, and a fun environmental initiative infographic.
