Directed By: Sarah Austin

An immersive, sensory theatre performance for babies 0-12 months and their carers.

Synopsis

An Uncertain Time is an award-winning sensory and immersive performance work for babies aged 0-12 months and their carers, created by artistic collective Sarah Austin and Co. It premiered at Darebin Arts’ FUSE Festival 2022, and was presented at Arts Centre Melbourne in 2023, where the season sold out within 48hrs.

An Uncertain Time employs a combination of live and recorded music, ethereal and malleable lighting design, visual projections, physical theatre and circus, and sensory experiences, to create a journey that engages both babies and their carers.

Thematically, the work explores the notion of uncertainty that permeates the first year of a child’s life, both for the child and their carers. It ponders the infinite possibility and potentiality of early childhood, as well as the responsibility of caring for new life in an ever-changing and often unstable global environment. The space can hold up to 12 babies, and is designed such that the babies and one or two carers sit on the floor in a rough circle while the performers inhabit the space in the centre and occasionally rove amongst the audience. Where there are more than two carers in a family, additional carers can be seated in the room.

The work won the 2022 Green Room Award for Outstanding Work for Children and Families.

Short Reviews

" ...the frame of the show, its gentle narrative, is really for the adults. The babies take notice of whatever they take notice of. What was fascinating was how engaged they were in the space. ... I wish this had been around when my kids were small. I would have loved to be able to bring them to this enchanting show; and who knows what seeds are now planted in those tiny, amazing brains? Lucky babies."
Alison Croggon, Witness Performance (Only A Year)
"My baby was captivated from start to finish! It was so well though through for both children and adults!"

Audience & Marketing Notes

This work is very specifically created for babies aged 0-12 months and their carers, drawing on neuroscience research about babies’ development. It’s a rare and special opportunity for audiences to access a work for this age group. (It is important to note that An Uncertain Time is not a show that toddlers and older children can also join in with – only the babies and their adult carers can participate – so it is best programmed outside of school holidays).

Selling Points

  • It’s a beautifully designed and lit immersive experience that is bonding time for babies and carers, in a space specially designed for both.
  • An opportunity to connect with parents of babies through local maternal and child health services and childcare centres.
  • This is an award-winning show: it won the 2022 Green Room Award for Outstanding Work for Children and Families.

Community Engagement

  • Optional 15 minutes baby playtime and social time for parents in the space after shows
